The Knights of Malta

History Lesson w/ Joe Cochran

Oral history lesson told by Joe Cochran on the nature of human trafficking during the first age of globalization.

Earlier this year Joe Cochran was among the 80 artists who were invited to Malta’s 1st Biennale to make work in response to Malta and broader geo-political themes. Two themes came to mind; the ongoing water crisis of the island and the migration crisis in the Mediterranean.

What evolved was Cochran’s project The Quartermaster an archival presentation of Cara Mehmed’s life. The project developed while working with the academic archive of Maltese history and meeting with William Zammit the writer of Slavery, Treason and Blood: The Failed Plot of the Slaves in 1749 and Kissing the Gallows, Crime and Punishment in Malta.
